Will an iPhone 12 Case Fit iPhone 13 Models?

Released in 2021, the Apple iPhone 13 features a more advanced dual camera system, a brighter Super Retina XDR display, and a boosted power efficiency with the A15 Bionic chip compared to previous models in the series.

Despite these upgrades, the 13 remains similar to the iPhone 12 in terms of looks. It also features Apple's patented MagSafe functionality, a wireless charging technology that made its debut on the previous iPhone model.

So, if you're planning on purchasing the iPhone 13, you may be wondering whether you can keep it protected with your old case. But, like some other models in the iPhone range, are 12 and 13 cases compatible, or will you need to invest in a new one?

While it can be tempting to reuse a case, especially if it's in good condition, we'll explain why key design differences mean that you should consider upgrading your accessories alongside your new phone.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 13 Case Compatibility

As we've mentioned, the iPhone 12 and 13 look very similar in terms of design, with both featuring flat edges and a tough glass front and back.

However, the differences between the two models in the following areas mean that their cases aren't compatible:

Size

The iPhone 12 and 13 have the same dimensions in terms of height and width, with both measuring 146.7 x 71.5 mm respectively, as well as featuring a 6.1-inch screen size.

However, the iPhone 13 is slightly thicker and heavier, with a depth of 7.65 mm compared to 7.4 mm. While this difference is minimal, it does mean that iPhone cases built for the 12 model are likely to be too tight for the 13, and therefore aren't compatible between generations.

Camera Placement

As well as improvements to the camera sensor, which provides better quality photos in low light conditions, one of the biggest differences of the iPhone 13 is the changes made to the physical camera module.

The rear camera bump is larger and has been repositioned, meaning that the cutouts on an iPhone 12 case will obstruct the lenses. The entire camera system is now positioned diagonally rather than vertically too, so a new phone case is essential for continuing to capture clear, high-quality photos.

Buttons

The button placements have also slightly shifted, being located lower on the iPhone 13 for both sets. This includes the power switch, as well as the silent and volume buttons.

Most iPhone cases are designed with cutouts specifically for the relevant model, which allow easy access to charging ports and buttons. These cutouts will be positioned too high on an iPhone 12 case, therefore reducing the functionality of your device if used with an iPhone 13.

Do You Need a New iPhone Case for the 13 Mini, Pro, and Pro Max Models?

Like the base model, the iPhone 13 Pro Max, Pro, and Mini devices have had limited design changes compared to their predecessors. However, the small changes that have been made affect case compatibility, meaning you'll need to purchase a new one if you're upgrading from the iPhone 12.

Like the base model, the compact, yet powerful iPhone 13 Mini has the same height and width dimensions as the 12 Mini. However, the 13 is slightly thicker, at a depth of 7.65 mm compared to 7.4 mm, and also features the same redesigned camera bump arrangement as the original iPhone 13.

The 13 Pro features the same changes, while also being heavier than the 12 Pro, at 204 grams vs 189 grams. Similarly, an iPhone 12 Pro Max case won't fit the 13 Pro Max due to the latter device's larger camera bump.

How to Choose a Good iPhone 13 Case

The iPhone 13 features a sturdy aluminium design and a strong Ceramic Shield front glass, which is built to be resistant to scratches and bumps. However, despite its durable frame, the phone remains vulnerable to damage from both drops and general wear and tear.

Investing in a protective phone case is therefore essential for preventing expensive repairs, while also ensuring that your device has a long lifespan. Here are the key features to look out for when selecting a great-quality case for the iPhone 13:

Durable Materials

Any good protective case for the iPhone 13 should be built with high-quality materials that offer an additional defensive layer for the screen, camera lenses, and internal components of your device.

Hard plastics such as TPU and polycarbonate are popular choices, which are known for both their flexibility and impact-dispersing properties. Silicone is another good option for its soft, rubbery texture, offering a superior grip to prevent those accidental drops.

However, full silicone cases can become stretched out over time, which compromises its protective capabilities. Some cases therefore feature a dual-layer construction, made with both plastic and small amounts of silicone to ensure lasting protection for your iPhone 13.

Impact and Moisture Protection

Another key feature of a good iPhone 13 case should be impact-absorbing technology.

Even when made with durable materials like Apple's Ceramic Shield, the screen of your device may still crack or shatter if dropped on its corners. To ensure drop-proof protection for this vulnerable point of impact, choose a case with R7x or R2x shock-absorbing technology infused into the corners.

Phone cases featuring raised bumpers and lifted edges add extra protection for the screen and camera lenses, while those that meet military-grade standards have undergone rigorous drop testing from heights of at least 4 feet.

The iPhone 13 also has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, meaning that it can survive submersion in depths of water up to 6 metres, for 30 minutes at a time. However, to guarantee protection in deeper water for longer periods, look for cases that feature a full-body watertight design.

MagSafe Compatibility

Originally introduced for the iPhone 12 series, MagSafe is an Apple-patented technology often infused into phone cases to support fast wireless charging.

The technology uses a magnetic array that connects with the magnets in the iPhone 13 to align with the charging coil for quick and effortless power transfer.

You'll also find MagSafe in magnetic wallet cases, featuring cardholders that offer convenient and secure carrying for your cards and other valuables. Vehicle mounts and power banks are other key MagSafe accessories that enhance the on-the-go functionality of your iPhone 13.
