The Top 5 Features of the New iPhone 14 Pro

As the most advanced Pro line-up to date ahead of its launch, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro models are designed to make the iPhone even more useful for both casual users and professionals. Powered by the fastest chip ever to feature in a smartphone, the series offers improvements for emergency situations and creative projects, as well as simple everyday tasks.

The iPhone 14 Pro series was announced at the Apple Event in California and made available to purchase shortly after on September 16 2022, with 4 new sleek designs to choose from.

Keep reading to discover the top 5 updates you can expect when upgrading from the 13 series, plus some iPhone 14 Pro Max hidden features that truly enhance the device's functionality and performance.

5 Best Apple iPhone 14 Pro Features

The iPhone 14 Pro series features a surgical-grade stainless steel frame and textured matt glass back, plus the same Ceramic Shield front that's tougher than any other smartphone glass. Alongside its upgraded design, here are some of the key new features that you can enjoy:

1. Dynamic Island

Rather than the notch at the top of the screen, Apple has instead designed a slimmer display and made the most of the previously unused area with a pill-shaped Dynamic Island.

This area combines the camera and redesigned TrueDepth hardware, which takes up a smaller amount of the screen compared with previous models.

The Dynamic Island changes in size to display different notifications and system-wide operations, from square-shaped Apple Pay payment notifications to a larger display for phone calls. Along with Apple Pay, some of the other alerts supported by Dynamic Island include:

  • Face ID authentication
  • AirDrop
  • Apple Music
  • Now Playing apps
  • AirPods connected alerts
  • Charging & Low Battery alerts

2. Always-On Display

With 2000 nits outdoor peak brightness, the Super Retina XDR display of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro models is built to be twice as bright as the iPhone 13 Pro. It also features ProMotion, a technology that offers a faster refresh rate of 60Hz for smoother scrolling.

Along with multiple power-efficient technologies, this refresh rate also enables the new Always-On Display. This is an updated lock screen wallpaper feature that permanently displays the time, widgets, and Live Activities, ensuring that they're available at a glance – no need to unlock your phone. The Always on Display lowers brightness and refresh rate to 1Hz while your phone is unlocked too, helping to prolong the all-day battery life.

You can also create multiple lock screens on your phone with different settings, such as Focus Mode, widgets, and background images, then use the lock screen switcher to change between them whenever necessary.

3. Camera Features

Another huge new feature of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pro models comes courtesy of the Camera app. These upgrades make it possible for amateur and professional photographers to capture high-quality images or videos, no matter your experience level.

Firstly, the Photonic Engine provides a huge improvement in mid-to-low-light performance. This applies Deep Fusion earlier in the imaging process to highlight details, enhance colour, and preserve textures. Users can also enjoy a new Adaptive True Tone flash, which now features 9 LEDs that change pattern based on your selected focal length.

New photographic styles allow you to use the upgraded Action mode in the Camera app, which adjusts to motion, shakes, and vibrations to deliver incredibly smooth-looking footage for HDR video recording. 4K Cinematic mode also adds seamless focus transitions for videos.

With the iPhone 14 series, you can take photos in Apple ProRAW. This offers greater creative control when editing the white balance, colour, and exposure of your photos beyond the default photographic style. Although this already features on Apple Pro models starting from the 12 Series, ProRAW is now available with an unprecedented level of detail, thanks to 48MP Camera app quality.

Activate photographic styles through some of the iPhone's key camera system upgrades, which include:

  • 48MP Main Camera: The new Main Camera features a quad-pixel sensor, offering exceptional low-light capture and a 2x Telephoto option. This provides full-resolution photos in Portrait mode and 4K videos with no digital zoom.
  • 12MP Ultra Wide Camera: The Ultra-Wide Camera adds greater detail to produce sharper, more focused close-up footage, thanks to macro video recording and photography.
  • Telephoto Camera: Enjoy improved quality with a new 3x optical zoom.
  • TrueDepth Camera: This enables better and faster low-light performance, making it easy to take group photos from further away with autofocus and an ƒ/1.9 aperture.

4. Safety Features

Along with an upgraded design and new Camera app features, Apple has also prioritised functionality with the latest iPhone models.

Thanks to a focus on emergency assistance, one of the key safety upgrades comes courtesy of Crash Detection. This feature can now automatically dial the emergency services by recognising severe car crashes, which is incredibly useful if you're unable to reach your phone.

It does this using a new dual-core accelerometer that detects high G-force measurements, plus advanced Apple-designed motion algorithms that are based on over a million hours of real-world data for improved accuracy.

Another new safety feature is Emergency SOS via satellite, which ensures you're always able to contact the emergency services even when outside of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

The 14 Pro comes loaded with questions to assess the situation and provides an iPhone user guide that shows how to connect to the nearest satellite. The answers will then be relayed to Apple-trained specialists, who can call for help and find your location with the 'Find My' app.

5. A16 Bionic Chip

Behind the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro max features is Apple's high-performance A16 Bionic Chip.

Powering the Dynamic Island and pro camera app, the high-efficiency chip offers 50% more memory bandwidth for graphics-intensive apps, while being up to 40% faster than the competition for demanding workloads.

It also combines performance with energy savings for a longer battery life that supports both fast and wireless charging, even with the iPhone's always-on display activated
